Shingle Roofing

Asphalt shingles are formed with a foundation of a single sheet of material, which is then reinforced with a sturdy fiberglass mat. Asphalt is the main water resistant material in these shingles, and it is also mixed with a fine mineral powder to increase weather resistance and resistance to fire hazards. Then the mineral fortified asphalt is applied to both sides of the fiberglass mat. As one of the last steps, the shingle is coated with tiny aggregate granules of ceramic-coated minerals for texture and durability. Finally, the shingles are coated with sealant and laminate adhesives to ensure proper long-term performance.

Concrete and clay tiles themselves will last for decades, however, the waterproofing underlayment will typically last about 20 years before needing replacement. The tile provides protection to the underlayment from the elements and UV radiation, but can easily crack or break if not treated with care. The underlayment is the main substrate that provides the waterproofing function of these roofs.
